The Institute for applied Musicology and Psychology -
Focuses of our work

A big part, the Institute for applied Musicology and Psychology is dealing with, are digital archiving systems in the science sector, as for example the system developed within the current research project "Online Content Management System for Vienna Music" funded by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund. Central elements and guidelines, that are important in the system development process, are the ISO standards for software engineering, the XML standard, EU guidelines for the preservation of cultural assets and fundamentals concerning usability-engineering and human-machine-interfaces.

Further fundamental research is done, developing virtual instruments, as for example in a current project supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), where the Variophon is transformed into a digital framework, and music-psychological experiments concerning the interdependency of music and emotions, i.e. music and fear or music and aggression.

The Institute for applied Musicology and Psychology wants to offer a platform for ambitious scientists, to practically use their acquired university knowledge. Within third-party financed projects, students should have the possibility to gain research experience outside the university to apply their knowledge through the usage of contemporary technologies. That way, unconventional ideas together with scientific substantiated methods are applied to practical tasks.
